A crown completely caps or encircles a tooth and is needed when a large cavity threatens the on-going health and function of a tooth. They are typically cemented to the tooth using special dental cement.
Crowns can be made from many materials, which are fabricated in the laboratory. They can be made in metal or metal fused to porcelain, or metal free materials. Crowns are used to improve the strength or appearance of teeth.
In your first appointment your dentist will prepare the tooth, and numb the area. An impression/3D scan of the area will be taken and your dentist will note the shade of the adjacent teeth in order to best match the crown to the teeth. A temporary crown will be fitted whilst we wait for the laboratory to create the permanent crown.
During your next visit, usually a fortnight later, your crown will be fitted by the dentist.
